If your wife is tired of carrying the marriage, she has probably been carrying you. Read that twice. I’m not saying it to beat you up. I’m saying it because I was the man she carried.
I wouldn’t have put it that way back then. I would have told you I worked hard, I loved her, and all I wanted was for her to love me the same way every single day. That sentence is the whole problem. I just couldn’t hear it.
Why Your Wife Is Tired of Carrying the Marriage
Here’s the sentence I lived on. If you would just love me, then I could love you.
Slow down and look at it. It’s a deal. I had terms, and she had to meet them before I’d show up. She never agreed to them, because I never told her they existed. That’s a covert contract, and she was never built to carry it.
Under the contract sat a man who didn’t know what he was worth. That’s the real issue in marriage, and I wrote a song about it called The Real Issue in Marriage. A man who knows who he is doesn’t need his wife to hold him up. A man who doesn’t will make her do it, and he’ll call it love.
Porn, drinking, no sex, the fights. Kathryn and I call those symptoms. You can spend years in the weeds on them and never touch the thing growing them.
Love, Withdraw, Blame
I ask men one question. Which man do you want her to love? The one who loves, the one who withdraws, or the one who blames?
They look at me like it’s a trick. “The one who loves. Obviously. If she’d just love me all the time.”
Hear what you just said. You hand her three men and ask her to love one. You can’t love three people at once, and neither can she.
Kathryn used to ask me, “Do you even like me?” I thought it was a ridiculous question. Look at everything I did for her. I could list it. She was on a roller coaster, and I was handing her receipts.
And you might say you don’t blame, you just defend. Same thing. Every time you blame, or defend, what she hears is I love you, and now it’s your fault. Do that long enough and she starts to believe she isn’t worth it.
The contract may be invisible to you. Kathryn will tell you the fallout isn’t. It’s loud. She feels the manipulation even when you can’t name it.
I’m not saying she walked in perfect. She has her side. Your side is the only one you can change, and it keeps getting worse while you wait. If you want to see how this plays out in the nice guy triangle, that’s the same cycle with a clean shirt on.
Doing the Work to Get Her Back Is Still a Contract
Some of you are thinking, good, I’m already working on myself.
Why? To get her to soften? To keep her from leaving? To hear her say it back?
Then it’s the same contract with better hours. You’re still doing it to get something. If you say I love you just to hear it back, you have a self-worth problem, and it will eat her alive. Most of you don’t have a Kathryn to absorb it.
I’m hard on men because I’ve been the man. If this sounds like you, covert contracts will show you the shape of yours.
What Changed When I Stopped Needing Her to Carry Me
Kathryn carried me. She kept carrying me until I wanted to get involved in my own marriage. I’m grateful, and I’m also clear that I put that on her.
Kathryn still lifts me up. I appreciate it. I just shouldn’t need her to do it for me to survive.
Sex was the clearest example. I kept taking, and I needed her to validate me. Kathryn says women deal with giving sex for love, and that’s a heavy thing to ask of her. Once the kids came, intimacy faded, and it will fade for you too if you need her to carry you. I don’t have that self-worth problem now, so I don’t need that from her.
I’m not saying women are fine until men mess with them. I’m saying that if I hadn’t needed my wife to make me okay, I think our healing would have gone faster.
This week, catch it. When you defend, call it blame, out loud, to yourself. When you do something nice, ask what you expect back. Any deal you find, drop it. If you can’t see your own contracts from the inside, that’s what marriage coaching is for.
Adam Was Standing Right There
Kathryn teaches this in her women’s Bible study, Women of Impact. Adam stood beside Eve and didn’t lead or correct her. Then God asked, “Adam, where are you?” Adam blamed “the woman you gave me,” and Eve blamed the snake.
First marriage ever, and the man passed the buck. I did the same thing for years. Leaders lead, and it should never have been Kathryn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the real issue in a marriage always the man?
In my experience, the thing underneath is the man’s self-worth. I’m not claiming women are fine until men mess with them. I’m saying the man is the one who needs to lead, and the part you control is yours.
What if my wife is happy to lift me up?
Let her. I’m grateful Kathryn does it for me. Just make sure you don’t need it to survive.
Is porn or drinking the real issue?
They’re symptoms, along with affairs and a dead bedroom. A man with self-worth issues who feels guilted and shamed will hide and cope. Guilting him harder doesn’t fix it. The self-worth underneath does.
Why isn’t working on myself enough to win her back?
If the goal is to get her to soften or stay, you’re still running a contract. Do the work for the man you’re becoming. If she comes back, she’s coming back to a different man, not a better deal.
What does Adam and Eve have to do with my marriage?
The first husband stood beside his wife, didn’t lead, and then blamed her when God asked where he was. If you go quiet and point at her later, you’re in the same spot. Lead before it falls apart.
She was never built to carry you. Put it down.
