How to Stop Chasing My Wife (Without Going Cold on Her)

If you want to know how to stop chasing your wife, start by naming the four or five behaviors you use to pull a reaction out of her, then stop doing them. Cass Morrow explains the difference between stopping the chase and punishing her with distance.

If you want to know how to stop chasing your wife, write down every behavior you use to get a reaction out of her. The texts you send when she does not answer the first one. The what’s wrong, what’s wrong when her face changes. The hand you put on her hip at 10pm to see what she does. Then stop doing those things, and put that same energy into work she did not ask you to do and will not applaud.

That is the whole mechanic. You are not trying to become less loving. You are trying to stop billing her for your reassurance.

And I want to be clear about something before you take this the wrong way, because most men do. Stopping the chase is not going cold. It is not silence, it is not the three days of nothing so she wonders where you went, and it is not moving out of the bedroom to prove a point. Those are just chasing with a different face on.

What chasing actually looks like in your house

Chasing rarely looks like a man begging on his knees.

It looks like a guy who sent the picture. I did that. I used to say peep and poke Kathryn whenever I was ready, grab her hand and put it on me, like a teenager. I sent a ton of pictures. None of it was attractive to her. Not one bit of it turned her on. I thought I was flirting. I was auditioning.

It looks like the man who cannot let her be in a bad mood. She goes quiet in the car and within ninety seconds you are asking what’s wrong. She says nothing. You ask again. Now you are the desperate, needy man in the passenger seat of your own marriage, and she has to manage you before she can deal with whatever she was actually thinking about.

It looks like the guy who empties the dishwasher and then tracks it. You did not do a chore. You wrote a contract in your head that she never signed, and you are going to resent her on Thursday when she does not pay out. I wrote about that whole pattern in covert contracts in marriage, because it is the most common form of chasing I see and almost nobody names it as chasing.

And it looks like the long text. The essay at midnight explaining how much you have changed, how hard you are working, how you are not that guy anymore.

Every one of those is the same move. You are trying to force approval out of her so you can feel okay about yourself.

Why chasing kills the thing you are chasing

Here is the part that took me years and a restraining order to understand.

When you chase, you put your wife on a pedestal. And when she is on a pedestal, she has to look down at you. A woman who has to look down at you cannot be your partner. She can pity you, manage you, mother you, tolerate you. She cannot want you.

That is not a punishment she chose. It is physics. You handed her your worth and asked her to hold it, and now every time she is tired or irritated or just done for the day, she is holding your whole identity in her hands and she never asked for that job.

There is also the accountability piece. When you spend your marriage trying to prove you are a great man, you start editing. You overstate your wins, you shrink your failures, and you drive her away trying to convince her of something she is watching not be true. Then you tell yourself she does not appreciate your effort. That is self-victimization, and it keeps you running in circles instead of doing one hard thing. I go deeper on that in you are not improving, you are trying to prove it.

Don’t prove. Improve. If you improve for her, she can feel it, and it makes her feel like a transaction. If you improve for you, she does not have to do anything with it, and that is when it starts to land.

How to stop chasing your wife, step by step

Start by naming the behaviors and cutting them. Not all at once. Pick the three or four that happen daily. Second texts. What’s wrong. Late-night sex checks. The apology you deliver every time she seems off. Write them down somewhere she will not find them and stop.

Then replace that energy instead of just removing it, because a man who stops chasing and does nothing else turns into a sulking roommate, and she will read the quiet as punishment. Take the hours back and aim them at your body, your money, your faith, your kids, your work. Do what you cannot do, not what you already can. That is where the change she can see comes from.

Keep initiating. Stop auditing the result. This is the line most men miss. You can still kiss your wife, still ask her on a date, still reach for her. What you quit is checking the scoreboard afterward and going cold when it comes back negative. Being pouty or annoyed after she says no tells her the affection was a down payment on something.

And do not confuse stopping the chase with caving, because men collapse those two constantly. If she says get out of the bedroom, you do not go sleep on the couch. If she says leave the house tonight, you do not leave. Leaving is a step toward separation and separation is a step toward divorce. You hold the direction of your marriage steady and you love her through every reason she gives you for why it will not work.

Expect her to test it. She has watched two good weeks before. She has watched week three. When she rams the side of your car to see if you spin out, stay on the track. Her resisting the change does not mean the change is failing. It means she has enough history to be careful, and you built that history.

What she will do when you stop

Some wives soften in a month. Some get more suspicious first, because a man who suddenly goes calm looks like a man who has a plan, or someone else. Some do not move for a long time.

Do not read her early reaction as your grade.

What I watch for on my calls is smaller than the big moment men are waiting for. She starts answering a question with more than three words. She tells you about her day without you extracting it. She stops flinching when you walk into the kitchen behind her. That is trust returning in millimeters, and millimeters are what you get.

If she is already fully checked out, the timeline is longer and the work is the same. I wrote that out in what to do when your wife is distant. And if the chasing has mostly been about sex, read what to do when your wife rejects you next, because pulling your worth out of her yes is the hardest version of this to quit. If the bedroom has been dead for a year or more, start with the sexless marriage guide instead, since that has its own sequence.

The part nobody wants to hear

You are going to be uncomfortable for a while.

Chasing is not a strategy you chose. It is a way to not sit with the fear that she is done, that you wrecked it, that you are not enough. Every text and every what’s wrong is a hit of relief. Take those away and the fear shows up with nothing in front of it.

Sit in it anyway. Take it to God, take it to other men, take it anywhere except to your wife’s feet at eleven at night. That is the actual work, and it is why men do this with other men instead of alone in their own head.

FAQ

Is stopping the chase the same as no contact or pulling away? No. No contact is a tactic aimed at her, designed to create anxiety so she comes looking for you. That is still chasing, because you are still trying to move her. Stopping the chase means you stay present, warm, and available in your home while you quit demanding a response.

How long until my wife notices I stopped chasing her? She will notice the absence within days. She will not trust it for months. The gap between those two is where most men quit and go back to the essay text, because the silence feels like losing.

Should I stop initiating sex? No. Stop initiating to find out where you stand. Keep initiating because you want your wife. The difference is what you do with a no. Sex is the checkered flag, not the starting line, so if you are getting nos, the work is on the rungs below it: safety, trust, and whether she believes you like her at all.

What if she asks why I stopped trying? Tell her the truth in one sentence. Something like: I was chasing you for reassurance and it put you in a bad spot, so I am working on me instead. Then drop it. Do not turn the answer into a presentation about your growth. That is chasing wearing a nicer shirt.

What if I already apologized a hundred times? Then your apologies have taught her that words are cheap in your house. Stop apologizing for a few weeks and let changed behavior do the talking. I laid out the order in how to apologize to my wife.

Can I stop chasing if she already filed? Yes, and it matters more then, not less. Men come to me with weeks left before the papers finalize. What moves the needle at that point is a steady man who is not negotiating, not begging, and not leaving.

I chased Kathryn for years while telling myself I was loving her. I did not stop because I got disciplined. I stopped because I finally started doing the work for me instead of for her signature.

You can start that today, without her permission and without her noticing.
