Yes, your marriage is under attack. The enemy’s whole job description is to steal, kill, and destroy, and marriage is a covenant God built, which makes it a target. But that is half the answer, and it is the half most men want to stop at.

The other half is this. He does not need to kick the door in if you keep leaving it open.

I know, because I left mine open for years and then prayed about the draft.

I Blamed the Attack Instead of the Man Doing the Damage

I was narcissistic. Abusive. Emotionally absent. I pushed Kathryn to restraining orders, separation, and divorce papers.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, I still had enough religion in me to say our marriage was under spiritual attack.

It was. That was also the most comfortable sentence available to me. It explained the wreckage without ever putting my name in the explanation. The attack was out there somewhere, invisible, and I was a man standing in the rubble looking heavenward instead of looking at the hole I punched in my own house.

God did rebuild me. He rebuilt all of it. But He did not do the part I was avoiding. I still had to stop screaming. I still had to stop making my wife manage my reaction. Grace covered me. It did not do my reps.

What the Enemy Actually Goes After First

He does not start with an affair. That is the end of a long road, not the beginning of one.

He goes after peace.

Peace is the first pillar of the Reset for a reason. And peace is not the absence of yelling. Plenty of men read that line and think they are fine because nobody got hit and nobody got loud this month. A home where either one of you is walking on eggshells is not peaceful. It is a cold war zone where everything is quiet because everything is dangerous.

That is the wound he works. Not the fight. The atmosphere between the fights.

When peace goes, safety goes. When safety goes, she stops bringing you the real stuff. When she stops bringing you the real stuff, you get a roommate marriage and a shared calendar, and two years later somebody says they just grew apart. Nobody grew apart. The house got unsafe one small moment at a time and neither of you named it.

The Lies He Actually Uses

He does not show up with horns. He shows up as a thought you have already had a hundred times, dressed up as insight.

She is the problem. If she would just meet you halfway. You have already changed more than she has. You deserve better than this. Other men have it easier. Nobody would blame you.

Look at the shape of all of those. Every one of them moves the work onto her side of the table and gives you permission to wait.

That is the whole trick. It is blame math, and it is the most effective spiritual attack I have ever seen in a marriage, because it does not feel like an attack. It feels like fairness. She may have her side. She probably does. But the second you hide behind her failures, you have a reason to never touch yours, and you will sit in that reason until the papers come.

Your side is the only side you can change. That is not a nice idea. That is the entire mechanism.

Where He Gets In Through the Nice Guy

Here is the version almost nobody preaches on.

A man can be doing everything right on paper and still be the door. Doing the dishes to earn sex. Keeping the peace to avoid a hard conversation. Apologizing fast so the discomfort ends, not because anything changed. Being agreeable all week and quietly building a ledger of everything she owes you for it.

Those are covert contracts. Hidden deals you wrote in your head, never told her about, and then resented her for not signing.

That is not righteousness. That is the nice guy triangle wearing a clean shirt. And it corrodes a marriage slower and more thoroughly than a shouting match, because you get to feel like the good guy the entire time it is rotting.

Fighting the Right War

If you actually believe there is a war on your marriage, then fight like it, and fight where the ground is.

Pray. Get in the Word. Get around men who will tell you the truth. Do all of it. And then go do the unglamorous part, because a man cannot pray his wife into feeling safe with him while his behavior keeps telling her not to be.

Stop reacting. You react, so you repeat the cycle. The pattern does not break itself.

Make the home safe before you ask for anything from it. Not safe as in polite. Safe as in she can say a true thing and nothing happens to her for it.

Own your side out loud, without a “but” attached. The “but” is the tell.

Expect her to test it. She should. If you have trained her for years not to believe your words, a few good weeks does not undo that, and her not softening yet is not proof the work is failing. It is proof she is paying attention.

Keep going when it is not working yet. That is where most men quit, and quitting is the point of the attack.

Some of you are past the peace stage and already staring at the end of this. If she is talking about leaving, read what to actually do when your wife wants a divorce before you make the next move, because panic is the enemy’s favorite tool and it has never once saved a marriage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my marriage is under spiritual attack or just broken?

It is almost never one or the other. Ask a better question. What in this house is mine to fix, and am I doing it? If the honest answer is no, start there. Any spiritual battle you are in gets fought by a man who is actually accountable at home, not one waiting for a supernatural explanation to arrive.

Can God save my marriage if my wife is not a believer or will not go to church?

Yes, and you do not get to make her belief the condition of your change. Your job is the same either way. Leading with a verse she never asked for is not leadership, it is pressure. She will feel your character long before she is interested in your theology.

Is divorce always the enemy winning?

Marriage is a covenant, and the mission here is restoration. But there are situations involving abuse and safety where separation is the right and protective move, and no one should be shamed into staying in danger. If you are the one who has been unsafe, your work is to stop being unsafe. That is not negotiable and it is not a spiritual issue you can pray around.

I repented and apologized. Why is nothing different?

Because an apology without a changed pattern trains her not to believe words. She is not measuring your remorse. She is measuring whether the thing happened again. Ten weeks of the thing not happening is worth more than any conversation about how sorry you are.

What if I am the one who destroyed it?

Then you and I are the same kind of man, and I will tell you what I know. God can rebuild what a man has destroyed. He rebuilt mine. But He is not going to do the reps for you, and there is no version of this where you skip the part where you become someone she is safe around.

You have prayed about it. Now go do the work that makes the prayer make sense.
